Health Department Leads the way in Fleet Greening - Case Study
In 2017, Tompkins County Health Department was in the process of phasing out their aging fleet vehicles. It presented an opportunity for the Department to implement key principles and actions outlined in the Tompkins County Comprehensive Plan: Planning for Our Future 2015 to curb greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to provide high quality health services to county residents. Transportation in the county accounts for 35% of total emissions. With the county legislature’s support, Public Health Director Frank Kruppa, led the Department through a fleet greening process. The Department is gradually phasing out their gasoline vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs).

New Charging Station Site Suitability
An electric vehicle (EV) charging station Site Suitability Criteria Tool (“Tool”) was developed to help compare the viability for installing alternating current (AC) Level 1 or 2 EV charging stations (used by plugin hybrid electric vehicles [PHEV] and all-electric battery electric vehicles [BEV]) in various locations, but primarily for sites with public access.Every location is unique and it is not possible to accurately account for all circumstances. The ratings are based on best practices and analysis of prior EV charging station installations. Each answer has a comment to explain the impact of each selection. This provides added insight to the user and educates potential site owners while scoring site suitability.
